Project name: Centrum české dětské knihy (Czech Children's Book Centre)
Project Number: KU-CA2-029
Grant Provider: the EEA Grants 2014-2021, Culture Programme - Contemporary Art Call II.
The project is implemented with the Norwegian partner MAGIKON FORLAG ANS
Project period: 1st of April 2022 - 31st of March 2024
Project description and objectives:
The purpose of the project is to establish the Centrum české dětské knihy (Czech Children's Book Centre) (hereinafter referred to as "CČDK") and its operation using the know-how resulting from the partnership with the Norwegian partner. The aim of the project, or rather the mission of the CČDK, is to promote children's reading and literacy, including the dissemination of quality children's literature created by connecting artists from the ranks of writers and illustrators, who will be given the opportunity to publish new children's literary works created in the framework of paid creative workshops and shared networking workshops with the assistance of experienced dramaturgs. The purpose of the workshops is to support artists in publishing their literary work through creative writing workshops for writers and art workshops for illustrators. The aim of the networking workshops is to bring these artists together with writers and illustrators to produce valuable children's literature in a new and innovative way. The selection of literary works for publication will be made by an expert board consisting of CČDK staff (RT members), i.e. experienced book and magazine editors and marketing professionals. The published literary works will then be presented and disseminated among the general public, especially among CS children, including children from children's homes, in the form of book signings, author readings and christenings of new works at the CČDK premises and at the Children, Do You Read?! The project aims, among other things, to develop a strategy for working with children's audiences and its subsequent implementation in the implementation of activities for children - workshops, seminars, thematic programmes and author readings. The implementation of this strategy will be subsequently evaluated and methodically described. The project will increase the quality of Czech artists, improve conditions for creative work and the development of reading among children and youth, including children and youth from children's homes.
Project activities:
Establishment and operation of CČDK
The activity focuses on the establishment and operation of the centre, using the know-how of the director and the management team, who will participate in an internship in the country of the partner organisation in order to exchange examples of good practice for the purpose of project implementation. The project will create 6 positions: director of CČDK, PR manager, team leader, librarian, playwriter 1, playwriter 2.
Creating a strategy for working with children's audiences
The activity is aimed at creating a strategy for working with children's audiences with the main goal of developing reading habits and a relationship with books. This strategy will be implemented through events for children, including children from children's homes, in the form of creative workshops, author readings, themed programmes and a mix of these events. The success of the strategy will be evaluated at the end of the project.
Supporting the creation of children's literature and its presentation
The activity is aimed at supporting artists, writers and illustrators with a focus on children's literature. Interested artists will be supported and trained by experienced artists in paid creative workshops (twice a month during the school year depending on the focus - once for writers, once for illustrators). Writers and illustrators will have the opportunity to connect with each other through networking workshops (once every 2 months). This innovative method will increase the value of their work. The resulting literary works will be submitted by the artists (independently/collaboratively) to a panel of experienced book and magazine editors, including marketing professionals, who will select the best works to be published by the Knižní stezka k dětem (Book Trail to Children Association). Works produced as part of the project will then be presented at events including a launch, author reading and CČDK book signing.
